Personal Statement
I'll first assess your abilities and previous music background at the outset, and then discuss with you methods and goals for the lessons. I'll introduce you to a wide variety of types of tunes within the vast repertoire of dance music of Ireland - marches, polkas, slides, jigs, reels, and hornpipes - as well as the several typical keys in which they're played. I'll be helping you learn to read notation, if you don't already. We'll focus on learning the scales that are generally used in Irish folk music. But primarily I will rely on by-ear or aural teaching of our chosen tunes, rather than exclusively through note-reading. I'd like you to bring a recording device to record the tunes and other portions of the lessons, so that you can refer to this when practicing new material at home. In essence, you'll be become equally adept at learning the tunes both by ear and through reading notation. You'll learn solid fundamentals and good playing technique on your chosen instrument, good timing and rhythm, as well as a deeper understanding of Irish music in general.
